The island of Martinique, population 390,000, is part of the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies and is an overseas region of France. As such it is part of the European Union and uses the Euro. Fort-de-France is the capital city of Martinique and boasts its own racecourse Hippodrome de Carrere, located about 10 kilometres east of the city, ideally situated close to the Le Lamentin Airport. The left handed grass track has a perimeter of 9 furlongs, with a trotting track on its inside to enable different forms of racing to be staged throughout the year. The grandstand is not large, but can accommodate 1,000 people, and further improvements were completed in 2016 when the track was named after Maurice Bruere-Dawson. The principal race at the track is the Gran Prix RCI.
